Sadhi Dharti Sadhe Lok episode highlights zoonotic disease threats in Jammu

The agriculture programme Sadhi Dharti Sadhe Lok, sponsored by Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu, today recorded a special episode on zoonotic diseases affecting the Jammu region. The episode featured Dr. Harsh Kumar Sharma, Professor & Head, Division of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, R.S. Pura, who spoke in detail about “Common Zoonotic Diseases in the Jammu Region and their Prevention & Control”.

During the interaction, Dr. Sharma explained how diseases that pass between animals and humans—such as brucellosis, rabies, food-borne infections and other emerging zoonoses—pose a continuing threat to public health and livestock productivity if not addressed through timely preventive measures. He emphasized practical steps for farmers, animal owners and the general public, including regular vaccination of animals, safe handling of milk and meat, use of protective equipment, early reporting of suspect cases to veterinarians, and the need for closer coordination between veterinary and medical services under the One Health approach.

The episode aims to raise awareness among viewers in Jammu and surrounding areas about safeguarding both animal and human health by strengthening routine biosecurity, adopting hygienic practices and following scientific advice from veterinary experts.
